Elevator repair parts company gets big productivity
lift.
GOING UP--That's where lead times and prices were going
for elevator repair parts when Carlos Escobar saw opportunity.
"When an elevator is down, it's an emergency,"
he says. "Building owners shouldn't have to pay a fortune and wait
six to eight weeks for the parts they need."That's why Carlos founded
Titan Machine Company in Long Island City in 1973 near an installed base
of thousands of elevators that could need repair at any time. The company
quickly established a very important niche for itself servicing elevators
not just in New York, but around the world.
World famous reputation.
Although most of Titan's business is concentrated in the New York area,
the company has gained a worldwide reputation for doing top quality
work in record time.
For example, when the Washington Monument
elevator went down, 3,000 passengers an hour were frustrated. "That's
a lot of lost revenue," Carlos points out. Titan was called on
to make a new elevator part overnight--and they pulled out all the stops
and got it there the next day. "We helped save a lot of vacations,"
he says.
In another instance, a U.S. Navy plane flew
an ammunition elevator part in from a supply ship in the Mid East, waited
for the repair part to be made, and then flew it back.
Delivery under stress has put Titan in the forefront of elevator repair
companies and earned them the title of the "Rolls Royce of elevator
repair parts." Says Carlos, "We just never know what's coming
our way, so we try to be ready for anything."
Complete capabilities.
Titan now has over 50 machines including machining centers, lathes,
thread grinders, drill presses, honing machines and gear hobbers.
When the time came for Titan to invest in
a new thread grinder, they began by looking at an English machine that
would have cost them about $800,000, but that was a stretch. That's
when a rep introduced Carlos to Drake Manufacturing in Warren, Ohio.
Skeptical at first, Carlos checked out their customer list and was impressed.
"They had top name customers like Ford and General Motors, plus
a very good price and a reputation for service," he adds.
When Titan needed a new thread grinder to
handle growing demand, Drake introduced Titan to Haylo Manufacturing
to handle worm grinding overflow and prove the capability of Drake's
machines. Using Drake Grinders, Haylo not only delivered a first-class
product, but also charged Titan about one-third of what it would have
cost Titan to make the worms.
"That's when we knew Drake really had
something--Haylo had to make a profit, and we would have had a substantial
loss if we made them," says Mr. Escobar. "Their Drake's performance
really sold us," he adds.
An immediate surprise.
Titan's first experience with their new Drake was a real eye-opener.
The set-up time for a 6" worm with 4 leads on their old thread
grinder was 2 hours. The set-up time on their new Drake was 5 minutes.
"Drake's part-specific programming helps us save a great deal of
set-up time," says Carlos. "It's almost unbelievable how much
capability the Drake System Engineers programmed into our machine."
"Saving on set-up is especially important
when you consider that as a repair part, each worm is different--diameter,
pitch, lead and length," he adds.

training.
During their 3 days of training in Warren, the employees of Titan
got to see first hand just how profitable their new thread grinder
was going to be. Instead of just getting familiar with their new
machine, the Titan people actually made parts they needed for
customers.
"The parts we made during training
were top rate," says Mr. Escobar. "When we returned,
we sold them all--at a nice profit," he adds.
"Plus," Carlos adds, "our
machine arrived with what Drake calls Part Smart™ programming--ready
to start turning out quality parts right from the first day on
the job."

A very good purchase.
"Our new Drake thread grinder helps us
give our customers the fast turnaround they need," says Carlos.
"And because it sets up fast and grinds aggressively, it also helps
us reduce the overtime needed to get the jobs done on time."
"All in all, this was the best machine-buying
experience I ever had in my life," states Escobar. "The only
thing I'm sorry about is that I didn't find Drake sooner."
