| "Our
Drake hit the floor at six on a Tuesday night. By Thursday morning
it was at full production."
Keith J. McPherson, President
Quality Chaser manufactures
thread chasers for all types of die heads and collapsible taps,
and various threading tools, working in high-speed steels. Quality
has been in this precision specialty since 1944. So when a Drake
CNC Thread Grinder was suggested for them, some veteran craftsmen
had to be convinced first. And since they were in the chaser business,
they knew their way around threads quite well.
Where the P.O. would be going
The first thing Quality did was to visit the Drake facility, to
get a sense of Drake's expertise and commitment to quality. In
fact, Keith McPherson brought along machinists who had operated
the original manual thread grinders. These craftsmen soon agreed
that Drake's CNC menu was the "user-friendliest" of
any they had seen.
"Runs two-tenths, all
day long"
That's how Quality describes the typical tolerances they hold
on their Drake. The fact is, Drake can engineer as much precision
as your work calls for; often building machines to tighter specs
than a new one costing tens of thousands more.
A very pleasant, profitable
surprise
When they ordered their CNC Drake, Quality Chaser intended it
to replace an older machine. When they started it up, it soon
replaced two machines. They found the one Drake doing the volume
of two ordinary grinders, and in less time. Keith McPherson attributes
a lot of that productivity gain to the way the Drake people worked
closely with them to customize the software specifically to the
work that needed doing.
