Mechanical/Project Engineer

Purpose:
This position is responsible for designing machine tools to meet customer requirements, producing quality drawings, determining bill of materials, monitoring production schedule and interfacing with the customer and all members of the production team.

  • 4-year degree in a technical field, mechanical engineering preferred, with experience in machine design, product development and project management

  • SolidWorks or other 3D experience required

  • Proficiency with PCs

  • Strong analytical, communication and presentation skills

  • Mathematical and mechanical aptitude

  • Technical writing and typing skills

  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics and CNC

  • Ability to visualize machine concepts and be attentive to detail

  • Cooperation, concentration and flexibility for performing a variety of tasks with team members

  • Self-motivated and multi-task oriented, with strong work ethic and ability to work in a self-directed, self-inspected environment

  • Capable of efficiently integrating existing methods with new innovations to economically solve machine design problems in a timely manner

  • Ability to manage projects start-to-finish to achieve on-time delivery, within budget

  • Valid drivers license and insurability to drive company or rental vehicles

 

Working Relationships:
This position is part of the project engineering team, directed by the Manufacturing Manager. As part of a team, this position is responsible for working well with other members of the organization. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing customer and peer training and troubleshooting. As coordinator of projects, effective communication with suppliers, other team members and customers is essential.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Analyze customer requirements and purchase orders to determine design, and create or modify existing
    machine designs

  • Make assembly drawings and detail drawings on CAD systems

  • Monitor production schedule for job, including obtaining materials, part fabrication, assembly, testing, installation
    and customer training

  • Determine the bill of materials required for manufacture

  • Order materials, selecting appropriate vendors

  • Create Assembly Plan, Project Engineering Book and Drawing Books

  • Interface between Systems Engineers, Machinists, Machine Tool Builders, suppliers and customers

  • Provide troubleshooting and procedure documentation as required

  • Assist with sales presentations and quotations

  • Travel independently by personal automobile or commercial transportation to customer sites and other Drake Manufacturing work sites as needed with minimal notice

 

Accountability:
This position is responsible for coordinating projects from start to finish, and for responding satisfactorily to customer, supplier and team requirements. Work must be completed in a timely manner and problems must be addressed in a pro-active fashion. A focus on quality is necessary to maintain ISO 9001 certification. Participation in the engineering team is essential to effectiveness.

Control Systems Engineer

Purpose:
This position is responsible for the planning, design, programming, implementation and documentation of the electrical hardware and computer software necessary to operate machine tools; developing the Operator's Manuals; training operators and providing customer support.

 

Position Demands:

  • 4-year degree in a technical field, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science preferred

  • Experience in computer programming; particularly machine controls, PLCs and CNCs

  • Ability to manage projects to achieve on-time delivery, within budget

  • Basic ladder logic, knowledge of PMC axis control helpful

  • Experience with Visual C helpful

  • Proficiency with PCs, including word processing/spreadsheets; CAD experience helpful

  • Creative, innovative, investigative, quality conscious and attentive to detail

  • Strong analytical, communication and presentation skills

  • Mathematical and mechanical aptitude

  • Technical writing and typing skills

  • Cooperation, concentration and flexibility for performing a variety of tasks with team members

  • Self-motivated and multi-task oriented, with strong work ethic and ability to work effectively in a self-directed,

Working Relationships
This position is part of the systems engineering team, directed by the Systems Engineering Manager. As part of a team, this position is responsible for working well with other members of the organization. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing customer and peer training and troubleshooting. Effective communication for frequent interactions with suppliers, other team members and customers is essential.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Design the control system

  • Review customer requirements, DMS quotations and customer purchase orders

  • Using CNC application languages, write and update software necessary for machine operation, including menu systems, macros, machine interface and ladder logic

  • Design screen layout for operator interface

  • Test programs to ensure accuracy and de-bug software as required

  • Lay out the electrical I/O and design electrical schematics

  • Develop and write electrical Bills of Materials, Systems Engineering Books and Operator's Manuals

  • Order materials, selecting appropriate vendors to assure on time delivery

  • Develop and optimize grinding and machining processes for projects, including specific parameters and customizations

  • Start up machine on plant floor, test and de-bug as required

  • Train customer operators both in plant and at customer site

  • Maintain liaison with customers and provide troubleshooting as required

  • Assist with sales presentations and quotations

  • Travel independently by personal automobile or commercial transportation to customer sites and other Drake Manufacturing work sites as needed with minimal notice

This position is responsible for responding satisfactorily to customer, supplier and team requirements. Machine Tool Builder
Purpose:
This position is responsible for the assembly, alignment, testing, installation and service of machine tools.

Position Demands:

  • Graduate of technical school, machine trades apprenticeship, or at least five years of related work experience

  • Good manual dexterity, ability to lift 50 pounds repetitively and ability to stand for extended periods of time

  • Competence in reading blueprints, schematics, micrometers and indicators

  • Overall understanding of machine function; fits/alignments; CNC operation and technical, problem-solving
    and mechanical aptitude

  • Familiarity with machine shop operations, tool crib, bench work, assembly, gauges, pumps, tubing and wiring

  • Ability to use lathes, drill presses, milling machines and grinders

  • Oriented toward safety, common sense and effective communication with customers and other DMS staff

  • Strong work ethic, high personal/work standards and ability to work effectively in a self-directed,
    self-inspected environment

  • Own a variety of hand tools

  • Valid drivers license and insurability to drive company or rental vehicles

 

Working Relationships:
This position requires an individual who works well with other members of the organization. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing customer training and troubleshooting. Effective communication with other employees and customers is essential.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Assemble equipment per specification with emphasis on quality, precision and accuracy to ISO specifications

  • Fabricate parts as necessary for assembly, in conjunction with machinists

  • Once machine is assembled, implement power-up, testing and de-bugging procedures. Must learn to operate
    machines successfully

  • Prepare the machine for shipment and assist in loading onto transport vehicle

  • Start up the machine at the customer site and train customers in operation and general maintenance

  • Address troubleshooting questions from customers and respond to them promptly, traveling to provide on-site
    service as required

  • Perform Warranty Assurance Service to inspect machine and address customer issues

  • Assist with training fellow Machine Tool Builders

  • Work with internal suppliers and external customers using cooperation, collaboration and tact

  • Maintain quality, precision and safety by checking own work and paying attention to detail, with a clear
    understanding of customer requirements

  • Travel independently by personal automobile or commercial transportation to customer sites and other Drake Manufacturing work sites as needed with minimal notice, including remote destinations with overnight stays

 

Accountability:
This position reports to Assembly Supervisor and is responsible for producing quality workmanship, and assembling machines that adhere to specifications. Work must be completed in a timely fashion. A focus on quality is necessary to maintain ISO 9001 certification. Problems should be addressed as they arise, with the Assembly Supervisor or other appropriate staff member. This position also participates in general upkeep of common areas.
